Masses of floating organic matter indicate pollution
Water enriched by fertilizers or manure allows algal blooms and bacteria to grow. This produces visible mats on the surface. Water color indicates growth in the water and erosion upstream of the pond. Very soon, oxygen levels in this pond will begin to drop, possibly to critical levels for the fish and other wildlife.
Also, these conditions favor "junk" fish such as suckers and carp over trout, bass and other more desirable species. Return to How To Contaminate Public Water
