1. Locally: We have discovered arsenic
above EPA Maximum Contamination Limits in approximately 1 out of each 25
wells we have tested in White County. Have you tested your well?
Has the Health Department or Ag extension agent told you about this risk?
Probably not. Because they do not normally test for it and would have no way of
knowing it is there. AWSA, on the other hand, has routinely tested for it as a
free service to our clients, and that is how we have discovered how common this
contaminant is in well water in North Georgia.
2. Central Kentucky, and other locations...
For example, as part of our unique
screening /research process, we have found arsenic, above legal limits, in
well water in:
White County, Georgia
Central Kentucky, and other locations
We have found Nitrate at levels
up to 20 times the allowable limits in wells in Georgia
We have found iron reducing and sulfur
reducing bacteria in well and municipal water supplies in:
White County, Georgia
Lumpkin County, Georgia
Cameron County, Texas
Central Kentucky, and other locations
We have found coliform bacteria in wells
in:
White County, Georgia and other
locations
As our data set grows we hope to
identify regions where testing the water for specific parameters other than
just the coliform tests, should be higher priority. Especially for those
chemicals that no-one is currently testing. Our local government agents have
never recommended to test water for chemical contaminants, even those that are
known from government testing to be found in the soil surrounding our wells.
If you have an opinion about this facet
of our work, please let us know. We are posting this information here on a
trial basis until we hear from individuals who visit this site. We would like
to work with our friends in the community to make this a better and safer
place to live and are willing to make changes based on feedback from clients
and site visitors.
Should we keep this going? Should we
continue to list regions/ areas/ counties where we have had positive tests for
specific parameters to alert others in those communities to problems their
neighbors have discovered? Is information like this worth a surcharge in
addition to our regular fees. Please keep in mind that the government does NOT
test individual wells until a serious problem has been identified (ex,
perchlorate in Iowa). Until people have gotten sick, or died. Our work would
provide an "early warning" of potential problems in areas where people have
not yet become ill or complained of problems.
